Who Am I?

Hi!

I’m Nicole and I’m the person behind Big Animals Little Vet.

I am currently a senior at Pennsylvania State University, and I will be graduating in May with a Bachelors of Science in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.  This blog has been an idea of mine for quite some time now after working in a lot of veterinary offices.  I realized that, for a multitude of reasons, a lot of pet owners, and animal lovers in general, are very misinformed on so many animal topics, even those outside of medicine.  It’s so easy for a pet owner to freak out over minute details because many of us over the years have just developed this “I can’t understand you so it must be worse than it actually is” mindset, one that I completely understand and sometimes fall into when I notice my cat being a little extra cuddly, or my dog now has some mysterious scratch.  What I wanted to do is create a space where all these questions and nuances can be answered in a way that isn’t dumbed down, but also still not over complicated.  Not only did I want to create a space that dealt with just pets, I wanted to be able to talk about science, and medicine, and be able to document my journey as I make my way into the animal field.  I decided because I never really talk about myself on this page, and as I give the website a makeover, I would make a little post of five little facts about me so you guys can get to know me better.  Don’t worry! Thursday we will back to talking about animals.

  1. My favorite animals are tigers.  They’re 100% the reason I’ve always wanted to work with animals.  They’re why I’ve always wanted to be a wildlife vet.  I just think tigers are the most beautiful creatures on this planet and they are absolutely mesmerizing in every way.  Literally, I am one of those people that goes to zoos and sanctuaries and tiger nurseries and just stares at them for hours at a time because I am so enamoured by these creatures.  (And if you ever want to see my adventures of being mesmerized by random animals go check out my instagram)

  2. I am bilingual, I can speak both English and Russian.  I’ve dabbled a bit in German, just because the language kind of excites me but I never really was to good.  Maybe sometime in the future I may try to learn another language!
  3. Outside of animals, I love to write.  I am a big fan of poetry and short stories, however I do want to someday write a book that somehow encapsulates everything that I love.  At school I’m a big part of W.O.R.D.S which stands for writers organized to represent diverse stories.  It’s an organization on campus where we really want to showcase the work of many writers, and non-writers, and just show our campus that everyone truly has a unique story.  If you’re ever interested in what we do, check us out on social media!
  4. I can meow with my mouth closed.  It’s an odd talent that is completely useless but I have taken a lot of pride in it since I discovered it in the second grade.
  5. I read poetry on an almost daily basis.  I have the poetry foundation app on my phone, so in order to get myself out of bed in the morning I like to scroll through and read some poetry.  If you’re ever interested in what I’m reading or what my favorite poem of the week is I would be more than happy to start posting about that on my facebook page.  My favorite poems personally are ones that can combine love with animals, whether it’s simply metaphorical or the poet just really loves animals, those poems tend to be the most uplifting to me personally.

Anyways, I hope this helps you guys get to know me better! As said, we will be back to the usual programming on Thursday.  If you ever have a specific subject you want me to write about, or have a question you want answered, be sure to message me on facebook or DM me on instagram and I’ll be more than happy to answer them!  See you guys Thursday 🙂
